The report on the activities in 2019 of the Observers group carrying out public control in the penitentiary institutions and bodies of the RA Ministry of Justice has been published. The Coalition to stop violence against women is also represented in the Observers group and pays special attention to issues related to the rights of women and minors in Abovyan penitentiary․ 

Women and minors in prisons need more attention due to their characteristics and special needs. In this regard, it is the duty of the state to do everything possible in order for women and minors in prison not to lose their physical and mental health.

During 2019 the Observers group carrying out public control in the penitentiary institutions and bodies of the RA Ministry of Justice carried out planned and current visits to the “Abovyan” penitentiary institution. During a planned visit to  the “Abovyan” penitentiary institution there were 81 detained persons, 5 of them were minor detainees, 1 was an adult (19 years old), 42 detainees and 39 convicted women. 

The annual report covers issues related to the conditions of detention of women and minors,  their relations with the family and with the outside world, the condition of punishment and quarantine cells, education and employment.
